Allergies are a common occurrence among children nowadays. Factors such as foods, medications, insect bites and/or stings, or even the weather can induce an allergic reaction depending on the child. Allergic reactions happen in the form of sneezing, wheezing, swelling, skin rashes, and so much more.
It is very important to be aware of your child’s body and the way it reacts to certain things. If you find that your child has an allergy to something, whether it is mild or severe, there are some supplies to keep in your home that would be very helpful should a surprise allergic reaction arise. These supplies are as follows.
- Benadryl/Claritin- Each of these medications can be bought over the counter and are completely safe for your child. Both medications help to combat allergies of all kinds as they are an antihistamine. Benadryl also relieves symptoms related to motion sickness, Parkinson’s Disease, and sleep deprivation. Please be aware, they can produce drowsiness, and both can be purchased in a non-drowsy option. This option will treat mild-severe allergic reactions fast.
- EpiPen- For more extreme cases, it’s a good idea to keep an EpiPen or two in the home if your child is severely allergic to something. Beestings and peanuts are two discrete allergens that can offset some serious symptoms in a short matter of time for those who are extremely allergic to them. The EpiPen is an epinephrine auto-injector, which allows you to inject epinephrine into someone experiencing anaphylaxis, or severe allergic reaction. The epinephrine will go straight into the bloodstream to prevent the reaction from escalating into dangerous territory.
- Humidifier: For certain allergies that produce rhinitis symptoms such as nasal congestion, irritation, and inflammation, implementing a humidifier into your home can help diffuse these symptoms. Dry air causes inflammation and irritation inside our nasal passages. Breathing air with a good quality of humidity keeps your nasal passages from drying out and over producing mucus to maintain lubrication which is what causes congestion.
Allergies are a condition that should be measured on a case-by-case basis. However, keeping the three of these medical supplies in your home will prove very helpful for a wide variety of potential issues related to allergies.
