Coping With Incontinence While at Social Events

Coping With IncontinenceIt can be frustrating to miss part of a movie or play in order to deal with urinary incontinence. It’s an unwelcome distraction to worry about urine leakage during a party, your child’s graduation or a dinner out. Finding the nearest restroom and getting through a big crowd in an unfamiliar building can be nerve-wracking too, but you can avoid all this. Use these planning tips to make your next social outing with friends much more enjoyable:

  • Skip coffee and soda: Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages leading up to the social event. In many people, caffeine can activate the bladder. Make sure to drink water, however, because staying well hydrated is important for your health.
  • Eat light: Skip acidic foods and spicy dishes in advance of your event. Citrus fruit or juice, for example, can make urge incontinence worse. Go easy on them to avoid accidents.
  • Scope out restrooms: Learn where the nearest bathroom is and try to use it before being seated. When purchasing tickets, request aisle seating.
  • See your doctor about a pessary: Women can be fitted with this small re-usable round device. When inserted before your event, it presses on the urethra and helps prevent leaks related to uterine prolapse and related issues.
  • Get a prescription: Ask your medical provider to recommend urge-controlling medication if it’s appropriate for you. Your doctor may direct you to start taking the medicine a few days before the party or event.
  • Consider disposable underwear: A quality incontinence pad may help you to get through your outing safely, but if you have any doubt, go with protective underwear.
  • Bring supplies: Place moist towelettes, an extra moisture-absorbent pad, cologne spray and odor-neutralizing liquid in your bag/purse.
  • Wear black: Pants, skirts or dresses in basic black can help to hide any leaks.
