4 Ways to Use Posture to Alleviate Back Pain

In many cases, back pain is caused because your spine is out of alignment. Luckily, simply altering your posture can help to reduce the muscle tightness and tension that leads to most of your back pain problems. Here are a few simple exercises you can try to help keep your spine properly aligned.

Squeeze Your Shoulder Blades

Stretching out your shoulders is a great way to loosen up your back. Sit up straight in a chair and put your hands on your hands on your thighs. Push your shoulders back and squeeze them together, holding this position for five seconds.

Imagine a Straight Back

Sometimes, thinking about how your back should be aligned goes a long way in helping you stand up straighter. Imagine that there is a straight line running through your body, attached to a cord at the top of your head. Think about how this would pull you upward, stretching your spine and increasing space in your chest.

Stretch Your Arms

Your arms play a huge role in your posture. Keep them limber by pulling your arm in front of your body across your chest. Keep it bent slightly at the elbow and pull it until you feel a stretch in your shoulder. Hold it for 20 seconds and then repeat.

Stretch Your Chest

It’s important not to collapse your chest. Prevent this by going into a corner and placing your hands on the wall with you elbows at shoulder height. Put one foot in front of the other and then slowly bend the front knee and lean into the corner. Hold this for 30 second.
