During normal breathing through the nose and mouth, your body warms, adds moisture to and cleans the air. These normal breathing steps are bypassed when breathing through a tracheostomy (or trach) tube, so air is cool and dry when it enters the lungs. The lungs react by secreting mucous, which can thicken and block or plug the trach tube, making it difficult to breathe. For this reason, tracheostomy humidification is needed.
